Individuals Coming Off Slimming Jabs Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that people who stop using new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users purchasing such treatments need to be cognizant of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a reversion to original mass within about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The research, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually have a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Issue?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Accounts

People who have discontinued the jabs describe a intense return of appetite.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.

This challenge is worsened if patients have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Use

Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is more common among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural management.
